Rich History and Culture of Poland - 2384 Words

When the word Poland is spoken, many think of a weak country with no national culture. But, contrary to popular belief, Poland has a rich culture with many interesting traditions and celebrations as well as being a peaceful and intelligent people. Although Poland is a peaceful country, it has been involved in many wars since the land was claimed by the early Polish settlers. Although Poland possesses a rich culture that has a variety of traditions and celebrations which are influenced by Catholicism, its culture is widely undiscovered to the foreign eye. The origins of Poland’s culture come from the Slavs who were conquered by the Poles during the 9th and 10th centuries. The subjugation of the Slavs also started the formation of borders that resemble the borders we see today, giving the Polish people a land to call home. At this point in time, the Poles were ruled by the Piast dynasty, and under this dynasty, Poland witnessed radical changes within their political and social a spects. For instance, Duke Mieszko I’s rule propelled Poland towards a Christian faith and thus began Poland’s national religion, Catholicism, which has been prevalent within the country since that time. The Poles speak a Slavic language, yet they possess a fondness for the English language, which is the most popular foreign language in Poland. Their culture was influenced by Latin and Byzantine cultures, as well as the numerous European occupations of Poland throughout history.
